Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo is one of those novels that I have always wanted to read. I own a copy but it has been sitting on my shelf, untouched. So I was pretty excited when I read at A Room of One’s Own that a read-a-long would be hosted at Kate’s Library.
My first encounter with Les Miserables was definitely the movie that starred Uma Thurman, Liam Neeson, Clare Danes, and Geoffrey Rush. I wasn’t able to watch the entire movie as I just happened to flip the channel to HBO and it was on. Ever since then, I wanted to read the novel for comparison.
I’m also happy that this read-a-long lasts for the entire year because I could either lag behind the rest or read ahead. It is completely at your own pace. Since this read-a-long starts in January, I might do some research on the background of Les Miserables to understand more about the time period that it is set in.
